This bottom-up initiated project by a group of young skaters from our neighborhood and LAGADO architects won first prize in an open ideas competition to revitalize the quarter and to create a stimulating space for the young. Things got rolling when the municipality commissioned us to come up with a visualisation of the proposed concrete pool in order to convince all parties involved.

After a lot of effort to convince the municipality of Rotterdam and countless meetings with the neighbours, a pilot project in the form of a wooden miniramp at the site location was realized in the summer of 2010 by master ramp builder Jeroen from Hectik Skateramps. We organized skateboarding lessons together with Stichting Singeldingen in order to get local people involved in our project.

The Heemraadsingel is a nice and beautiful green lung in one of the old characteristic neighbourhoods in Rotterdam. Our design ambition was not to create an obstruction of the open view through the park. The skatepark is sunken into the ground, banking down to create skatable terrain. In this way, it can also be used as a water storage square in the case of extreme rainfall.

The pool is currently under construction and will be finished by the end of July 2012 by SkateOn!
